Scientific Classification

Class:               Actinopterygii (Ray-finned Fish)

Order:              Gonorynchiformes (Milk fish)

Family:             Halecopsidae

Genus:             Halecopsis

Species:          insignis (Delvaux & Ortlieb 1887)

Halecopsis insignis is the currently the only described species of the Gonorynchiformes Order from the London Clay. This species of Milkfish was relatively small, and are one of the more frequently found fish in the London Clay including examples from Sheppey (Division D/E) as well as Seasalter, Kent (Division A3/B1). When found, it is very often only the rear of the skull as the streamlined point at the front of the skull is often missing as with all of the specimens showcased below.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
  • No evidence of sclerotic ossicle in eye orbit (1)
  • Distinct raised ridge with radiating lines on Preoperculum (2)
  • Large fenestra opening on top of skull (3)
