Similar to other Elopiformes in the London Clay, Protarpon oblongus is only represented by one specimen in the collection of the Natural History Museum, London. The specimen is somewhat limited, representing only a small section towards the back of the neurocranium however differs significantly from Protarpon priscus due to it’s more elongated morphology.
- Similar to P. priscus with two diverging raised ridges on top of cranium (1)
- On P. priscus, these diverging ridges start nearer the rear of the skull
