Scientific Classification

Class:               Actinopterygii (Ray-finned Fish)

Order:              Beryciformes (Soldier/Pricklefish)

Family:             Holocentridae

Genus:             Naupygus [NAUP-I-gus]

Species:          bucklandi (Casier 1966)

Naupygus bucklandi is a very rare fish from the London Clay with only a few specimens known. The best example is on display in the Oxford University Museum and showcases exceptional skull preservation. More recently, another specimen was found by local collector Dan Hogburn which not only contained fully articulated post-cranial anatomy of a Naupygus, but in fact contained two in the same species in the same septarian nodule.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
  • Very flat, slightly-angled top of skull (1)
  • Two parallel ridges with significant striations (2)
  • Two mirrored depressions near the epiotic (3)
  • Deep recesses at the front of the ethmoid (4)
