Aulopiformes represent a group of 230 living species of bottom-dwelling fish containing Lizardfish, Flagfins and Grinners. 

 

There are currently 4 described species of Aulopiformes from the London Clay formation dating from the Ypresian, Eocene – 50-54 million years ago.

 

This artistic reconstruction showcases an extinct Argillichthys toombsi, camouflaged on the muddy sea floor, sitting in wait for an unsuspecting stomatopod, Bathysquilla wetherelli.
