Scientific Classification

Class:               Actinopterygii (Ray-finned Fish)

Clade:              Elopomorpha

Order:              Anguilliformes (Eels)

Anguilliformes represent an order of Ray-finned Fish containing over 1,000 living species of Eels however their origins date back to the Late Cretaceous.

Within the London Clay, only two marine Eels have been described to date – both under the genus Rhynchorhinus. I believe however there were many more and will attempt to differentiate at least 4 different species based on the differing morphologies of Eel skulls found in the London Clay.
